What Does Gasket Installation Really Cost ?

What Will a Steam Leak Cost? For this scenario, we have two pipe fitters: Doodley DoRight & Didley Doofus . Both employees work at similar companies in town with the exact same amount of experience and training. Doodley DoRight places a high degree of importance on the installation of gaskets in his plant, whereas Didley Doofus prides himself on how fast he can install the gasket and move on to the next task .   Below is a side by side comparison of Doodley & Didley’s installation of each gasket in the same application in a single bolted flange connection and the associated costs over a short, 12-day period. Based on this scenario, here are a few things to consider: Proper gasket installation is initially more time consuming but it improves your return on investment (ROI) – increasing operating profit by reducing overall downtime and gasket inventory requirements. This analysis is based on one 3” 150# bolted flange joint. Just think about how many bolted joints are in an ...

How much cooling water leakage is too much leakage?

Is there a rule of thumb to measure the proper amount of cooling water leakage , when using braided packing on rotary equipment (ex: pumps, agitators, mixers, etc.) ?  Jocelyn Vachon - VP B.Dev / Product Specialist In order for braided compression packing to seal and work properly on a dynamic equipment, water is injected through a flush line and distributed inside the stuffing box by a lantern ring. A small amount of this water will therefore leak out from the stuffing box.  The objective is twofold : A positive pressure of clean water has to be created inside the stuffing box, to prevent process fluid from entering the stuffing box To minimize frictional heat, by creating a hydrodynamic lubricating film between the stationary packing rings and the rotating shaft. This is a balancing act between how much compression is exerted on the packing rings set, to reduce to a minimum process fluid leakage versus limiting frictional heat. A...

Junction with leak problem, Should I suspect the fastener device...?

Junction with leak problem, Should I suspect the fastener device...? Jocelyn Vachon - VP Busines development - Robco Uneven Bolt Stress. An incorrect bolt-up procedure or cramped working conditions near the flange can leave some bolts loose while others are overtightened and crush the gasket. This can cause in-service leaks, especially in high temperature services when the heavily loaded bolts relax. in order to close the micropores inside the gasket itself and to fill in the unevenness at the flange facing - gasket interface, the assembly bolt load should be calculated according to the ASME Code. Every bolt has a correct torque/tension elasticity range and a properly tensioned bolt works at its optimum efficiency. If the tension is too low, the nut could vibrate or work loose and if the tension is too high (overstretched), the bolt may yield. That being said, we strongly encourage you to Choose the proper fastener device (Bolts, nuts and washers) for example use a hardened washe...
