How to Simply Seal the Door of an Industrial Oven with a Tadpole Tape Gasket ?

There are a variety of types of industrial ovens with various door geometries. To seal the heat (radiation, convection, conduction) inside the oven, a flexible gasket is often required. Some ovens incorporate a groove to place an insulating rope. Also, strips or extrusions made of polymers from silicone or fluorocarbon can operate at relatively high temperatures. The most viable option, however, is a tadpole tape gasket. But, what is a tadpole tape gasket?

What are the materials used ?

A tadpole tape gasket consists of mineral-based textile materials (fiberglass, silica, ceramic) made into a seal starting with a core made of an insulating rope, surrounded by a sown fabric, the ends of which are allowed to extend (see graphic). A wire mesh can be added to the surface, to protect the fabric from excessive wear. Alternatively, a core of knitted metal wires (stainless steel or nickel-chromium) can be used, if the door is open-closed and the seal is compressed every day: the metal core provides better long-term mechanical resilience, although its insulating value is less.

At what temperatures can they operate?

Seals have a temperature range of 500 to 2000°F (260 to 1100°C). Assemblies with exotic materials achieve continuous resistance up to 2400°F (1315°C)

 Are the fabric-based seals airtight?

Extensive testing at Robco has shown that it is not possible to achieve complete air-tightness (˂ 1psi) with fibrous materials (fabrics, ropes, etc.) even if compressed with significant fastener loading. A polymer coating should be incorporated where the temperature permits. The role of an oven seal remains mainly to contain the heat.

 Are they easily available?

Tadpole tape gaskets are sewn and do not require any jigs, special tooling or long production set-ups for their production: it is therefore possible to manufacture small custom orders.

How does the tadpole tape gasket hold in place?

The gasket fabric strip is inserted between the oven wall and a bolted metal strip to hold the gasket in place.

What information is required to obtain the correct tadpole tape gasket for your oven?

    • Operating temperature

    • Flame impingement on the gasket or only radiant heat

    • Media present in the oven

    • Oven door opening-closing frequency on the gasket

    • Significant wear on the gasket surface

    • Dimensions of the seal: diameter of the bead + width of the fabric flange = total width

    • Quantity required / Date required

6 reasons why you need heating blankets on your industrial liquid containers during winter

The Benefits of Heated Covers for Industrial Liquids During Harsh Canadian Winters When it comes to handling industrial liquids during the brutal Canadian winters, maintaining the proper temperature is critical for efficiency and safety. Whether you're storing or transporting chemicals, oils, adhesives, or other sensitive materials in drums, pails, or totes, freezing conditions can severely impact their viscosity, usability, and even cause irreversible damage. One practical solution to this challenge is the use of heated covers or heating blankets. Here’s why they are essential for industrial applications. 1. Preventing Freezing and Maintaining Flow Canadian winters often bring sub-zero temperatures, which can cause industrial liquids to freeze or become too viscous to be effectively processed. Heated covers help maintain the fluidity of liquids by applying consistent, controlled warmth around drums, pails, or totes. This prevents costly downtime associated wi...

Understanding Sizing of Semi-Metallic Gaskets When Replacing Soft Gaskets

Sizing Semi-Metallic Gaskets When Replacing Soft Gaskets When replacing soft gaskets with semi-metallic gaskets, it's important to understand the sizing differences and considerations. The following guidelines provide suggested dimensions based on experience to help you choose the appropriate non-metallic gasket size to replace a soft gasket. These sizings are not mandatory but serve as useful recommendations. 1. When Flange Dimensions Are Provided If the customer provides the dimensions of the flange, the following guidelines can be used to determine the appropriate gasket size: Gasket Inner Diameter (I.D.) : The inner diameter of the gasket should be the bore size of the flange plus a minimum of 1/8". Gasket Outer Diameter (O.D.) : The outer diameter can be up to the bolt hole circle diameter minus one bolt hole diameter. This applies when the proposed gasket width corresponds to the standard width of semi-metallic gaskets, which is typically 1/2", 3/4...
